Why are we re-doing the ranking system?
Our current ranking system is based on winning and losing rounds and full games. It doesn’t matter who you play against, and you can climb it infinitely just by playing. These are factors that result in a leaderboard that is nearly impossible to climb for new players. In the new system, the rank reflects your skill, not how much you play and how long you’ve played for.
When will the new system launch?
October 1st. Everyone starts fresh at a 1000 points. The old leaderboard and winner of that season will be archived and honoured forever, on our website.
The new ranking system in short
If you beat a tougher (i.e. higher ranked) opponent and you earn more, beat someone weaker (or a bot) and you earn less. Lose to a weaker opponent and it costs you more than losing to a stronger one. Every round, your points are based on who you're actually up against. Our advanced bots will give you more points than the beginner ones. The higher you get, the tougher the players you’re matched against, and the harder each extra point becomes to earn.
The math - for the very curious
Every round, we calculate your win chance by comparing your rating to everyone else's in the room: Your win chance = 10^(your rating/400) ÷ (sum of 10^(rating/400) for everyone in the room)
Win the round and you gain points equal to (1 − your win chance) × a factor. Lose it and you drop points equal to your win chance × that same factor. That factor starts high while you're new (so you land at your real rank fast) and settles lower once you've played more matches (so grinding can't move it much).
Example: you're rated 1200, up against a 1400-rated player and a 900-rated bot. Your win chance comes out to about 23%. Win the round and you gain about +12. Lose it and you only drop about −4 (you weren't expected to win anyway).
