Gin Rummy vs BONK - what is the difference?

Published: Aug 29 2026 - Read time: 2 min

What’s so special about Bonk?

Bonk is a rummy-style game at its core, with players taking turns drawing and discarding while completing sets just like in Gin Rummy. However, BONK has a couple of added elements of strategy which makes it way more fun if you ask us:

  • Progressively more challenging rounds - more complex sets and runs to match each round.
  • Calling "Bonk!" to claim a card when it\'s not your turn.
  • Flying twos - Rank two cards can be used as substitute for any other card in a set.

Furthermore it is designed to be played with two standard decks and 3-5 players. Read more on our dedicated rules page, or complete the tutorial in the official BONK app.

What is Gin Rummy?

Gin Rummy is a classic two-player card game and the spiritual ancestor of BONK. The game objective is to form Sets and Runs of cards, with players taking turns drawing and discarding cards. Sets consists of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g. three 4s) while Runs consists of three or more consecutive cards of the same suite (e.g. 6, 7, 8 of spades).

Each player is dealt 10 cards, while the remaining cards are placed face down to form the stock pile. The top card of the stock is turned face up to start the discard pile. The players take turns by first drawing a card from either pile, and then discarding a card from their hand. The game progresses until a player manages to match enough cards into sets or runs.
